Experiments in amotivic serial composition

Bart Vanhecke
Visual
2010 - 2013
The research is centred on the development of a systematically atonal, dissonant, and amotivic serial composition technique. In this context, the concepts of tonality, consonance, and melodic motif have to be rethought. This leads to the development of new aesthetic ideas and their implementation in the composition of new pieces.

The experimentation within the research is not in the first place done in the composition process, but rather during the phase of aesthetic development. It represents top-down experimentation; thought experimentation starting from fundamental aesthetic research, i.e. the development of new ideas, which are then implemented or tested in the practice of composition.

Not only is the method of the research project based on the problem-solution-verification method used in scientific experimentation, some of the concepts it produces are also based on existing experimental outcomes and their validity will be tested using new experiments.
