ODC 2024 Media in Music and Sound Arts: Awareness, Interaction, and Identity
Introduction
Reflecting on the roles that media play in artistic practices both challenges conventional boundaries and enriches artistic narratives. Musicians and other creative practitioners communicate through media while at the same time they are influenced by a medium's affordances. The interaction between media and artists is further complicated in contemporary artistic performance environments from the moment artists integrate multimedia installations or digital instruments in their practice, embracing advancements in technology such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality.
This conference invites artist-researchers to discuss how different media have impacted the creative process and have shaped artists’ identities throughout history, from print, radio, and television, to today’s various digital and interactive platforms. We envision the following questions as starting points:
- How does a medium contribute to the creative processes of performers or composers while, at the same time, defining their artistic identities?
- Does a historical instrument, either as a medium or an aesthetic choice, interfere with contemporary concert settings?
- How do different media impact the audience's and performer's realities?
- How has media evolution influenced the way art and culture are curated, produced, distributed, and consumed?
