June and September 2026

Orpheus Instituut is pleased to welcome Julija Bagdonavičiūtė as a visiting researcher. As a doctoral candidate at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, she explores the evolving role of the musical instrument within contemporary artistic practice.

During her residency, Bagdonavičiūtė will develop her research on post-instrumentality, focusing on the piano as a dynamic and relational entity rather than a fixed sound-producing object. Drawing on posthumanist perspectives, her project investigates how the materiality of the instrument shapes creative expression and reconfigures the relationship between performer and instrument.

I am particularly interested in how the piano can be understood as a multifaceted and evolving body, whose identity shifts across different artistic contexts.
Julija Bagdonavičiūtė - Visiting researcher at Orpheus Instituut

At Orpheus Instituut, she will collaborate with the MetamusicX research cluster, engaging in discussions and initiating interviews on current challenges in contemporary music. Her residency will contribute to the development of her typology of “migrating instrumentality” and support the preparation of a forthcoming book chapter for an artistic research publication.
