Orpheus Instituut is pleased to welcome Alessandro Gambato as a visiting researcher. During his four-week stay in September 2026, he will further develop his practice-based research into the relationship between performer, electronic instrument, and sound.
Alessandro's research responds to what he identifies as an increasing disembodiment in electronic music, where the instrumental gesture and its relationship to the resulting sound can become increasingly detached. His work seeks to bridge this gap by treating the loudspeaker as the main instrument of the electronic musician: a physical, material and performative object.
His practice focuses on the use of recycled speakers, exploring their individual acoustic characteristics and limitations through preparations and physical interventions on self-built multichannel systems. Building on works such as Love Me Radically and a recent site-specific performance developed during a residency in Space A, Kathmandu, Alessandro will investigate how these approaches can generate new forms of instrumental practice and dramaturgy.
At Orpheus Instituut, he will develop his research in dialogue with researchers from the Music, Thought and Technology research cluster. His work will focus on exploring intimate sound dimensions on small and versatile self-built multichannel recycled sound-systems.
A key part of the research will be the development of an integrated interface that enables direct physical and algorithmic control over the speaker membrane, thus allowing preparations with various materials not yet explored in previous works.
By combining practice-based research with theoretical reflection, Alessandro Gambato’s project contributes to ongoing discussions around electronic instruments, technology, materiality, and embodied musical practice. His research also explores questions of accessibility and sustainability by working with recycled materials and questioning the exclusivity associated with increasingly sophisticated technological systems in experimental electronic music.
