Andrew is a singer and artistic researcher whose work explores early polyphony in relation to philosophy, science, and visual culture. A large portion of the year sees him on the road touring with the Dutch polyphony ensemble Cappella Pratensis and the Belgian art-ensemble graindelavoix. Notably, Cappella Pratensis was awarded the Classical Gramophone 2024 “recording of the year” for its CD, Missa Maria Zart by Jacob Obrecht. In 2022, Graindelavoix’s CD “Josquin the Undead” also won the prestigious “Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik.” He has performed and recorded with Sollazzo Ensemble, Ensemble Diskantores, Bach Choir and Orchestra of the Netherlands, Vox Luminis and Nederlandse Bachvereniging, appearing in major European festivals, including Festival Ambronay, Festival Aix en Provence, Salzburger Festspiele, Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, Tage für Alte musik Regensburg, and Laus Polyphoniae.
Andrew’s writing and research emerge from his long-term engagement with early music practice, casting a critical eye on how the musical past is interpreted, performed, and theorised today. His doctoral project, The Folded Map, explores polyphonic music as a way of thinking about the world. Focusing on the period in which musical notation, visual perspective, and new models of the cosmos were developing alongside one another, the project asks how these different ways of representing the world shaped what could be known and imagined. Through historical research, composition, and performance, Andrew investigates notation not simply as a record of music, but as something that continues to produce new interpretations and musical possibilities. Within Bruno Forment’s research cluster Resounding Libraries, Andrew extends these questions to the archive itself. Working with ambiguities, contradictions, riddles, and encryptions in historical musical sources, he explores what happens when the library is treated not simply as a repository of works, but as an active participant in their interpretation and reinvention.
