Nicolás Kliwadenko

Doctoral researcher
Chili / België

Nicolás Kliwadenko is a Chilean composer, computer musician and improviser whose practice focuses on the interplay between highly systematised frameworks and spontaneous responses within collaborative methodologies. His work includes acoustic and electroacoustic pieces that combine traditional and non-traditional notation with improvisation and unconventional uses of digital media.

Kliwadenko earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and completed Master’s degrees in Music Composition at the Universidad de Chile and in Electroacoustic Music at the Institute of Sonology, Royal Conservatoire of The Hague, both with distinction. In 2025, he was awarded the Konrad Boehmer Prize for Outstanding Research, and in 2015, he received First Prize at the Luis Advis Composition Competition. His works have been presented at festivals and venues across Europe, China, and North and South America.

He is currently a doctoral researcher affiliated with the Fragment: Accordances – Enactments research cluster at Orpheus Instituut and a research associate at the Institute of Sonology. His research examines compositional strategies in which diverse pre-existing materials and transformative methods co-determine complex, collage-like structures, reconceptualising musical works as provisional, evolving instances rather than fixed objects. His current project develops computational tools, web-based documentation platforms, and performance strategies to investigate iterative, recursive creative networks and generative musical practices.
