Orpheus Institute welcomes visiting researcher Peter Asimov
August 19, 2024Peter Asimov is a researcher and principal investigator at the University of Cambridge specialising in the study of Yvonne Loriod's compositions and her impact on modernist music. Asimov's work focuses on reimagining French modernism through the rediscovery of Loriod's musical legacy.
Peter Asimov's primary goal during his time at the Orpheus Institute is to collaborate with Luk Vaes in reviving Yvonne Loriod's Trois pièces for performance, shedding light on a lesser-explored aspect of prepared piano tradition. By delving into Loriod's compositions and their significance, Asimov aims to challenge existing narratives and expand the understanding of postwar modernist music and prepared pianism.
Additionally, Asimov intends to document the challenges encountered in the process of recuperating Trois pièces, exploring various solutions and artistic possibilities that arise. Through a combination of historical, ethnographic, and practice-based research methodologies, he seeks to not only bring Loriod's work back to the forefront but also to reframe historical narratives and performance techniques within the context of modernism and prepared pianism, ultimately contributing to a more diverse and inclusive representation of composers in the realm of experimental music.
