Four Hands is a performance piece developed collaboratively by Catherine Laws and Teresa Brayshaw
What is the role of touch in musical performance?
In her research at Orpheus Instituut and the University of York, Catherine Laws explores how touch shapes musical sound, performer identity, and the way audiences experience music. Four Hands brings these ideas into artistic practice. Created and performed by Catherine Laws and Teresa Brayshaw, the piece explores the many dimensions of touch in piano performance: – touch that produces sound – touch that intercepts and transforms resonance – touch as a way of listening through the instrument.
Rather than simply controlling the piano, the performers engage with it as a responsive partner, echoing Catherine’s research question: What are we really touching when we play?
