What happens to the relationship between composition and performance when they are embodied by one and the same person?

In this SONUS publication, edited by Luk Vaes, we explore a series of questions:

Can we identify particular characteristics in composers’ approaches to interpretation? What sensibilities do they bring to performing their own music, as well as the works of others? And to what extent should performers feel bound by the composer’s own performances?

The SONUS publication The Performer-Composer: Dual Identities in New Music, Volume 1 explores these questions through the creative duality of the one-person performer-composer, bringing together perspectives from artistic research, performance studies, and historical musicology.
