Experimentation versus Interpretation
Eventvan 26 maart 2012 tot 28 maart 2012Academy 2012
The Orpheus Academy 2012 – with the title ‘Experimentation versus Interpretation’ – will challenge the concept of ‘interpretation’ in the field of music performance, and investigate musical ‘experimentation’ as an alternative or encapsulating path. Such a challenge involves the concept of ‘work’ and has implications in the fields of ‘notation’, ‘hermeneutics’, editorial concepts (such as the ‘Urtext’), as well as with the broader relationship with the past.
Some of the questions that will be addressed during the Academy include the following:
- What is ‘interpretation’ in music performance (also ‘staging’) today?
- What might be ‘experimentation’ in music performance?
- How can a performer experiment through practice?
- Do aspects of experimental practices underlie the conventional interpretation paradigm?
- How can ‘experimentation’ concretely challenge ‘interpretation’?
- What can music performance add to an understanding of the role of experimentation in knowledge societies?
True to our tradition, a carefully selected guest faculty has accepted to take on this challenge and to make an important contribution to the development of the artistic theoretical discourse. This year’s guest faculty includes: Hermann Danuser (Humboldt University Berlin, Germany), Frederic Rzewski (Independent Artist, Brussels (Belgium)/London (U.K.)) and Richard Taruskin (University of Berkeley, U.S.A.). In addition, artist-researchers from the Orpheus Research Centre in Music [ORCiM] will periodically react to and interface with the faculty, both through offering their insights into the evolving research discourse of the Academy and by giving complementary musical presentations that articulate ORCiM’s characteristic fusion of musicianship and research work.
