Workshops and masterclasses

Composition and live electronics - five decades of Nono’s technique

In Jonathan Impett and Juan Parra’s workshop ‘Composition and live electronics - five decades of Nono’s technique’, composers will be introduced to several stages of Nono’s compositional technique – some half a century of evolution and revolution - through detailed analysis of sketches. Instrumentalists, composers and electronic musicians will have the opportunity to share work and experiment in a laboratory setting. Composers and sound designers will be guided through the commonalities and unique characteristics of the electronic setups of a number of Nono’s works. We will focus on exploration and refinement of the performative aspects of such works from the perspective of the composer and electronics performer.

La lontananza - 'Hay que caminar’ soñando

Marco Fusi’s workshop, “La lontananza - ‘Hay que caminar’ soñando,” delves into Nono's final compositions. It offers an in-depth study of instrumental strategies, performing techniques, and the creation of musical dialogues in line with Nono’s late creative vision.

Piano masterclass on ...sofferte onde serene…

Paulo de Assis's exclusive workshop, centered on '...sofferte onde serene...', is specifically tailored for pianists. This workshop transcends the boundaries of a conventional masterclass. It's not just about mastering the piano part of the piece. Instead, it's a performative laboratory where pianists will delve into the nuanced relationship between the tape and piano components, explore Luigi Nono's compositional techniques, tackle challenges associated with tape diffusion, and examine the evolving history of the piece's performance. This workshop is a unique opportunity for pianists to deepen their understanding and execution of this intricate work.

Beyond Das Atmende Klarsein

In this masterclass for flutists, Helen Bledsoe explores Das Atmende Klarsein in a Nonoesque, non-academic way in order to ask deeper questions about musicianship, applicable to all repertoire. How can I become a more creative collaborative partner for composers? How do I take ownership of my own sounds? To answer this we will look at sound in detail, using our ears, diving deep into harmonics and multiphonics, exploring risk taking, interpretation, improvisation. We will also explore some easy technologies such as the halophone and other simple live-electronics. Any repertoire, any flutes welcome.
