2010 - 2013
Hans-Jörg Rheinberger uses the notion of 'experimental system' to describe processes by which science function. Linked to this is the notion of 'epistemic things'. The project wants to (a) explore Rheinberger's theory and (b) evaluate whether such a theory can sensibly be employed in the field of artistic research.

The project will look at and analyze 'experimentation' in four different directions:

  1. Relation to science
  2. Use in music
  3. As part of artistic research methodologies
  4. Epistemological/philosophical implications

It will develop a transdisciplinary understanding of the notion of 'experiment' that can of use for the methodologies of artistic research.

Key text: Rheinberger, Hans-Jörg. 1997. Toward a History of Epistemic Things: Synthesizing Proteins in the Test Tube. Standford: Stanford University Press.
Further readings include authors such as: Bruno Latour, Gaston Bachelard, Ludwig Fleck, George Kubler etc.
