New knowledge on human-machine interfaces provide new possibilities for sensing and embodying music, sound and gesture. Using practice-led research, and drawing on posthumanist performativity, assemblage theory and aesthetics, this project explores the research question:
How can technology be used to expand conducting practice beyond traditional techniques and scoring materialities and be a catalyst for discovering new ensemble “intra-actions” and musical aesthetics?
This research investigates aesthetic outcomes from embedding posthumanist performativity, assemblage theory and divergent performance within conducting practices, examining the emergence of the conductor as a compositional agent. It further explores how AI reshapes musical materialities, temporalities and performativity within composition and performance. How might conducting practice expand into a compositional role? And what might that look/sound/feel like?
Through divergent performance and experimentation with technologies, ensembles and scoring materialities, this research aims to expand conducting practice contributing to discourses on musical, sonic, visual, gestual, material, temporal and algorithmic aesthetics.
